One memory in particular stands out: I was in the third grade, working on a vocabulary assignment, when I stumbled across the word “sculpture” in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. I paused, not because of the definition, but because of the photo below it. It looked familiar—too familiar.

“Look, we have that sculpture at home!” I said to my aunt. She glanced at the image, and after a moment of stunned silence, she said, “That’s your mom!”

It was her. A photograph of my mother as a young college student, captured mid-creation while carving a mahogany wood sculpture. For years, that sculpture had been sitting in our home, and we had no idea that her photo was published in dictionaries across the country. Even my mom didn’t know. As it turns out, this image appeared in thousands of copies of the Merriam-Webster dictionary—many of them landing in the classrooms where she taught art, and later, served as principal in Boston Public Schools.
